In Rotation: The Muslims - Mayo Supreme

Phil Collins - April 16, 2019

Mayo Supreme album cover

The uproariously offensive second album from Durham, North Carolina's The Muslims is the invigorating challenge needed in 2019. It may not be a comfortable listen but that's the whole idea. Systemic racism should not be comfortable. A binary view of gender should not be comfortable. Mayo Supreme takes on difficult subject matter with blazing confidence and brash comportment. It makes these songs unforgettable.

The first three songs on the album give the listener a quick punch to the gut. This is often laced with a satirical sense of humor. The band's comedic timing is on full display in "YA LATE," a jab at bandwagon protesters with nothing at stake. "Moshed Potatoes" opens the album with choppy bursts of a chorus and a metaphor positioning the US as a disappointing side dish. "Fuck the Cistem" is the catchiest song here, and hey - it's a catchy chorus that also has something to say. The Muslims don't mince words, but read through those lyrics and you'll find more than shock rock.

What genre of music is this? A little hardcore, a little hip hop. Any other questions, refer to The Muslims' FAQs.

Mayo Supreme is out now on Don't Panic Records & Distro. There is a limited run of CDs on Don't Panic's Bandcamp page, where you can also find the aforementioned lyrics. The Muslims play at the Pinhook in Durham, North Carolina on May 12 with Choked Up and Snake Shaming. More info on that show here. Stream Mayo Supreme below.
