In Rotation: Retirement Party - Somewhat Literate

Phil Collins - July 2, 2018

Somewhat Literate album cover

The lyrics on Chicago emo punk band Retirement Party's debut full-length are a mix of vulnerability, self-deprecating humor and confidence, set in the mundanity of everyday life. "That's How People Die" opens the album with a recollection of a harrowing sunburn and the nagging wonder about the small mistake that could be one's undoing. Avery Springer's vocal delivery complements the tone of these songs, often fighting for space with the standout lead guitar parts. Those riffs might be the first things to stick in your head, as evidenced by the aforementioned "That's How People Die" as well as "Passion Fruit Tea" and "Scene 48".

Still, the lyrics about Cheez-Itz stuck in your teeth, shitty car rides and sun poisoning, along with the thrift store album cover, give Somewhat Literate its grounding. Emo-area punk is having a moment in this city. Between this album, Turnspit's Desire Paths from earlier this year and Sincere Engineer's Rhombithian last fall, that makes three big local emo or emo-tinged punk albums. Keep 'em coming.

Retirement Party is currently out on tour in support of the album. They will be back in town for a show at the Camp/us on July 27 with Home Burial, Royal Oaks and Fredo Disco. More info on that show here. Somewhat Literate is out on vinyl now through Counterintuitive Records. Order the record here. Stream the album below.
