In Rotation: Death of Self - Look Elsewhere

Phil Collins - April 4, 2019

Look Elsewhere album cover

Chicago skate punks Death of Self released their debut full-length last month. The band rips through 11 songs of relentlessly fast-paced punk. Fans of Descendents and Bad Religion will find plenty to like here. "To The End" and "Two Minutes" open the album with a fierce one-two punch. "Two Minutes" is the catchiest song here, with an easy-to-learn chorus and contagious energy. Re-recorded versions of "Newsflash" and "All-Seeing Eye" appear back-to-back in the middle of the album. They originally appeared on the 2017 Bomb the Burbs split with Bad Timing. "The Truth," which originally appeared as the title track of Death of Self's first EP, closes the new album. The old songs get some fresh life here in these new recordings. Look Elsewhere is Death of Self's most polished release yet overall and the old songs fit in with the new.

I recently interviewed vocalist/guitarist Nick Feltes and drummer Joe Ott about the new album. Read that here. The band's album release show last month at Cobra Lounge was packed, and rightfully so for a stacked lineup of local favorites. Death of Self played the new album in full and a couple other songs. The show had the fun, spirited vibe that you want from a local release show. Plus, it sounds like we won't have to wait long for the next release. A split with Cincinnati punks SlutBomb is on the way April 20. Look Elsewhere is out now on CD and online. Stream it below or head to Death of Self's Bandcamp page. Death of Self plays at Reggies Music Joint on Sunday with Okilly Dokilly, Playboy Manbaby and Black Bear Rodeo. More info on that show here.
