In Rotation: Blood People - Great Reactor

Phil Collins - June 12, 2019

Great Reactor cover

Blood People have established a presence in the Chicago scene with just a few EPs and singles to their name. It is a testament to the power of these songs. The loud, up to 11 guitar; the growl of vocalist Aly Jados; the eminently catchy big hooks; the spot-on familiar grunge sound and the polished recording. Let's just say there's a reason they've played Soldier Field in addition to the usual punk venues. The band's new EP, Great Reactor, opens and closes with two of their best songs yet. "Great Reactor" finishes the EP with a chorus that sounds like it came straight out of a 90s music video. That chorus knocks you down while opener "Shapeshifter" has a chorus that will gleefully pick you up. It's the kind of chorus you get caught singing in the car.

Nothing against the three songs in the middle of this EP (there is even a shout out to Liars Club in there) but "Shapeshifter" and "Great Reactor" are knockout hits. It was the same thing with "Burn the Ships" on Blood People's debut self-titled EP. Nothing wrong with the other songs, but "Burn the Ships" was the one you ran to tell your grandma about.

Anyway, do not blow it this Friday. Blood People play at Turnspit's farewell show (sigh). It's at the Beat Kitchen and the lineup is stacked. The Blind Staggers, SteveO & The Crippling Addictions and Still Alive are all on the bill. More info on that show here. Stream Great Reactor below.
